John Denver may have said that Country Roads take folks home, but on Sunday, September 14th hikers will be walking our Country Roads not “home”, but from Albion to Homer along the North Country Scenic Trail (NCST).
Spanning 4,900 miles from Vermont to North Dakota, this trail weaves its way through eight states. Along its journey, it runs right through the heart of Albion and Homer. The local “Chief Noonday Chapter”, with a membership of over 50 volunteers, is responsible for maintaining and promoting 120 miles of the NCST as it traverses Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Barry Counties.
Any and all are welcome to join the hike. There is no cost and best of all – transportation is planned to bring hikers back to the starting point when they finish the 11 miles trek. The hike will start at 9:30 from Albion’s Victory Park (signs will be posted). Hikers can choose between a shorter 4-mile hike (2 miles out and return) or 11 miles ending near Grist Mill Park.

Additionally, the Chapter is currently hosting a “3 COUNTY CHALLENGE” in which a person hikes all of the miles in any of their 3 counties. Calhoun has 58 miles, and the miles for Sunday’s hike are almost all on back country roads with few hills to climb.
Having transportation back to the starting point is a big draw for many of these hikers. Those who hike all three counties earn a patch and other awards. This hike was scheduled for Sunday as there should be less traffic on these roads.
Those interested in refreshments will meet at Malleable Brewing Co after the hike. There is no need to sign up, simply show up at the park.
