Forks Senior Center Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Albion’s Forks Senior Center celebrated its 20th Anniversary on September 12th with an open house attended by nearly 100 seniors. Established in 2005, it serves over 400 members and offers fitness, social activities, and nutritious meals. The center also provides information on senior services and has community support for its programs.

Nearly 100 seniors and friends joined Albion’s Forks Senior Center staff and board in celebrating their 20th Anniversary with an open house Friday, September 12th. The Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting in their honor, refreshments were served, and a convivial gathering was enjoyed by all. The center is located at 101 N. Albion at the corner of North Albion and Cass Streets.

“We couldn’t have done all of this without the continued support of our members and board,” Executive Director Luann Sommers said.

The Senior Center was launched in September of 2005 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It is the longest serving senior center in Calhoun County with a membership of over 400 area seniors, 60 years of age and older.

Visitors to the center will find a well-equipped fitness room, exercise classes, bingo, card games, puzzles and many opportunities for socializing each day. Milestone Senior Services serves a hot nutritious senior meal at the center each day as well. Meals need to be reserved and are available on a donation basis. The center hosts frequent euchre tournaments, which have been very popular. The next tournament will be held Thursday, September 26th.

The Senior Center is an excellent resource for information about Calhoun County Senior Millage funded programs, as well as other programs and services available in the community. CareWellServices Southwest offers counseling on Medicare, and shares other senior services available such as MI Choice Waiver, personal emergency response buttons, hearing aids and glasses. They are also hosting an Energy Smart for Seniors presentation Wednesday, September 25th at 1pm where free energy saving kits will be distributed to participants.

The Senior Center is supported by the Albion Recreation Millage, Calhoun County Senior Millage, CareWell Services Southwest, and community donations and support.
