Orchestral Sounds of Fall: College Concerts of October

As the leaves turn and Albion settles into autumn, the city will soon be embracing a month of must-see musical performances. Local musicians have been hard at work—practicing, rehearsing, and polishing their pieces in preparation for the stage.

As the leaves turn and Albion settles into autumn, the city will soon be embracing a month of must-see musical performances. Local musicians have been hard at work – practicing, rehearsing, and polishing their pieces in preparation for the stage.

From the polished sounds of Albion College’s faculty recital and homecoming concert to the seasonal melodies of the Kellogg Community College Concert Band’s “Echoes of Autumn”, local college venues are set to come alive. These upcoming performances promise more than just an evening of music – they’re a chance to gather, celebrate the season, and enjoy the artistry of neighbors and friends alike.

Seasonal Sounds of KCC Concert Band

The Kellogg Community College Concert Band is a dynamic ensemble of talented musicians dedicated to bringing exceptional live music experiences to the Battle Creek community. Under the leadership of Director Christopher R. Momcilovich, the band showcases a diverse range of musical styles and genres for audiences of all ages.

Their upcoming performance, “Echoes of Autumn”, will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Binda Performing Arts Center on campus at 450 North Ave. The program “will reflect the beauty and change of the season, weaving together familiar sounds and fresh musical perspectives that capture both reflection and renewal,” according to Momcilovich. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

Performances from Albion College Staff & Students

The Albion College Department of Music will be presenting two concerts at Goodrich Chapel this month: a faculty recital at the beginning of October and a homecoming concert toward the end of the month – both of which will be free and open to the public.

Albion College Showcasing Talents of Staff and Students Alike

The Albion College Faculty Concert takes place Sunday, October 5th at 4:00pm. The program will feature performances from trumpeter Matthew Kay, pianist Nicholas Laban, soprano Jenny Ribeiro, and trombonist John Robinson.

Matthew Kay will showcase his virtuosic trumpet skills with a traditional Mexican folk song arranged by Rafael Méndez, as well as a fantasia on “Rule Britannia”. Jenny Ribeiro will present opera arias by Verdi and Puccini, in addition to more contemporary songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Dave Malloy, and Sara Bareilles. John Robinson will perform Zygmunt Stojowski’s thrilling Fantasy for Trombone and Piano.

Later in the month, Albion College students will gather to showcase a diverse range of music during their annual Homecoming Concert. This event will take place on Saturday, October 18, at 7:30pm. Multiple musical groups will be performing, celebrating the variety of talent that continues to grow at Albion College.

Participating groups include the following:

  • Albion College Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Clayton Parr
  • Albion College Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Ji Hyun Kim
  • Albion Jazz Ensemble, also known as the “Jazz Collective”, under the direction of Rufus Ferguson
  • Briton Singers under the direction of Dr. Clayton Parr

More than 150 students play or sing in the performing ensembles sponsored by the Music Department. Ensembles are directed by faculty members and open to all students on campus. All ensembles perform regularly scheduled concerts in Goodrich Chapel as well as in venues across campus, within the Albion community, and abroad.
