Big Changes for Albion Athletics: New Hires Aim to Elevate the Briton Experience

Albion College athletics is refreshed for the 2025–26 year with new leadership across multiple sports, including baseball, football, wrestling, and women’s basketball. Experienced coaches and enthusiastic newcomers aim to enhance athlete development and team success.

Albion College athletics is entering the 2025–26 academic year with a wave of fresh faces and new leadership across several programs. From the gridiron to the diamond to the wrestling mat, recent hires bring decades of combined experience, youthful energy, and a shared commitment to raising the bar for Briton student-athletes.

Baseball: New Leadership on the Diamond

The most visible change comes in the baseball program, where longtime assistant Matt Rix was officially promoted to head coach on July 1, 2025. After 12 seasons on staff and a successful interim campaign, Rix now leads the Britons into a new era. Known for his deep ties to Albion and player-first approach, Rix is expected to stabilize the program and build on recent momentum.

Joining him is Gordie Theisen, a veteran coach with nearly 40 years of collegiate experience. Most recently the pitching coach at Division II Newberry College, Theisen is respected for his ability to develop arms and manage pitching staffs. His addition is viewed as a major boost to Albion’s depth and player development on the mound.

Football: Reinforcements on the Sideline and in the Training Room

The Britons’ football program also welcomed two key hires on August 1. Bryan Sander steps in as Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. Sander arrives from Millikin University, bringing more than 16 years of coaching experience. His defensive mind and special teams expertise are expected to add discipline and precision to Albion’s play.

On the health and wellness side, Derek VanDeWater joined as a new athletic trainer. VanDeWater will serve football while also working with swimming & diving, men’s lacrosse, and Albion’s growing e-sports program. His arrival underscores Albion’s investment in athlete care and comprehensive support across sports.

Wrestling: A Familiar Face Returns

Albion’s wrestling mats will be home to a new, but familiar, leader. Owen McDaniel, a 2025 graduate and former All-MIAA wrestler, has returned as an assistant coach for both men’s and women’s wrestling. McDaniel’s immediate transition from standout athlete to coach reflects both his leadership skills and Albion’s belief in developing its own. His presence ensures continuity for the wrestling program while also serving as an example for current student-athletes.

Women’s Basketball: Fresh Energy on the Bench

On the hardwood, Evan Metz joins as an assistant coach for women’s basketball. A Michigan State graduate, Metz brings coaching experience from Flint Powers Catholic High School and AAU programs. Known for his player development skills and enthusiasm, Metz is expected to energize the staff and support Albion’s quest for consistency in MIAA play.

Looking Ahead

Together, these hires represent a significant reshaping of Albion’s athletic leadership heading into 2025–26. With a mix of seasoned veterans like Theisen and rising leaders like McDaniel and Metz, the Britons are positioning themselves for both immediate impact and long-term growth.

For Albion athletes and fans, the message is clear: investment in people is investment in success. The college is betting that this infusion of experience, energy, and expertise will elevate the Briton athletics experience both on and off the field.
